And the new anti-semitism is...

Islamophobia Watch flags up a story in today's Guardian calculated to stoke Muslim paranoia. Muslims are now getting the same treatment Jews had a century ago

Yet a report in last month's Telegraph reported Jews are far more likely to be victims of faith hate crimes than Muslims.

Jewish people are four times more likely to be attacked because of their religion than Muslims, according to figures compiled by the police.

One in 400 Jews compared to one in 1,700 Muslims are likely to be victims of "faith hate" attacks every year. The figure is based on data collected over three months in police areas accounting for half the Muslim and Jewish populations of England and Wales. The crimes range from assault and verbal abuse to criminal damage at places of worship.

Indeed, today's Daily Mail reports a wave of hatred as attacks on Jews reach record high.

The Anti-Semitic Incidents Report 2006... blames the huge rise on a number of factors ranging from Israel's invasion of Lebanon last summer to the jailing of the historian David Irving in Austria for denying the Holocaust.

The physical descriptions of perpetrators in 205 of the incidents show 96 were by white people, 28 by black people, 60 by Asians and 16 by Arabs. The report has been passed to ministers.

So the new anti-semitism is er... the old anti-semitism.

Which is of course why it is so important to remember Holocaust Day. I hope The Muslim Council of Britain will be able to make it next year.
